The “Sun Moon Series’ installation is reminiscent of Japanese ‘noren’ or curtains, yet connotes a portal or entrance into the unseen world, in reverence to kami, spirits or sacred powers in the cosmos. It consists of 7 textile ‘flag’ sculptures hung delicately on wooden rods. Hung in unison, they connote a series of portals or an entrance into the unseen world.
The hypnotic sequence of suns and moons are symbolic of the various phases in one’s life, like rings of a tree.
For this installation, Faith-Ann created a collection of 7 unique digital composites, layering elements of photographs from her personal archive - of the sun and moon, sun-dappled shadows, forests in Japan, photos of her own abstract brush strokes - which she then composited into dream-like compositions, printed onto thin fabric, sewn, and hung ceremoniously.
Each composition represents an emotional state, a phase of life, a layer of one’s self distilled into an image.
Each textile sculpture beckons the viewers to pause, walk, touch, interact and become absorbed in this soft, womb-like space. The installation serves as a tactical reminder to make the most of our finite time here.
