Sumi-E Workshop at 15oth Anniversary of City of Santa Monica
I’m honored to participate in the grand finale celebration of the City of Santa Monica.
As the current Artist-in-Residence at the City of Santa Monica’s Camera Obscura Art Lab, I’ll be joining the celebration by leading an art workshop :
Sumi-e Free Expression Workshop
December 13, 2025 • 12–5 PM • Third Street Promenade
As my practice is rooted in slowing down and coming together, this workshop is inspired by Sumi-e, Japanese ink painting.
Participants of all ages will learn the basic tools used in Sumi-E, an ancient ink-painting practice (which originated in China and was brought to Japan by zen monks).
We will explore how to use the Sumi-e brushes, ink, and water to paint a beautiful winter still-life of seasonal plants and branches.
What I love most about this practice is how the emphasis is about taking deep breaths and sinking into the experience; seeing how nature inspires you - and making slow and deliberate marks. In our busy world, it’s a beautiful and welcome form of creative expression and meditation. All ages will enjoy experimenting and going with the flow.
Free and open to the public.
I’d love for you to stop by and say hello!
There will be many performers, food, and activities throughout the day — and it’s a beautiful moment to gather (and maybe even get some holiday shopping done).
P.S. I studied Sumi-E at the Venice Japanese Community Center. I highly recommend you to learn it too! It’s a great stress reliever. More info here!
