ANGEL CITY FC AANHPI SCARF DESIGN

Angel City FC SCARF DESIGN

Women’s Soccer Team Commission (2025)

Soccer scarves are a beloved tradition around the world, and therefore, Faith-Ann was honored to design the limited edition, collectible scarf, in honor of AANHPI heritage month, May 2025, for Angel City Football Club.

Her goal in this design was to create something reflective of her Japanese heritage, the Asian American spirit, the powerful team of women players. She also wanted it to be “ a  hopeful visual totem for our city post-wildfires, while we are all healing and yet resilient.”

To create this scarf, the artist added the color red to Angel City’s color palette of cream, pink, black and white, as it is a symbol of prosperity and celebration in so many countries in Asia (In China, it symbolizes good luck + celebration. In Hawaii, red or ‘ula ‘ula is a deeply sacred color associated strength, power, divinity, and protection). She designed a sun, symbolic of new beginnings and spring, to match the exact color of the sun during the fires, which is indelible in our minds for Angelenos. “Within this memory, there is hardship and loss, but also incredible strength and communal resilience.” Growing in front of it from ash, Faith-Ann depicted young bamboo — one of the strongest, flexible, and agile materials —a metaphor for our community, the AANHPI spirit, and Angel City FC. She added with a Sumi-e swipe, to honor that meditative painting practice, which originated in China, that she studied at the Japanese Venice Community Center. The silhouettes of O'hi'a Lehua flowers at the bottom of the scarf represent reslience + growth as well —a reminder that, even after hardship, there is renewal and hope. The font I used for ‘resilience’ is inspired by the Philippine & S.E. Asian sword ‘sundang,’ which evokes a strong, warrior spirit.

The vibrant, colorful limited edition scarf is available for sale on Angel City’s website.
