Light & Air Studies

Light & Air Studies

Light & Air Studies is a site-specific installation exploring the relationship between light, atmosphere, movement, and perception.

Created for the Annenberg Community Beach House as part of dublab's Ocean of Sound, the installation transformed a room overlooking the Pacific into an immersive environment of suspended translucent textiles inspired by the rhythms of the sea. As daylight shifted and the ocean breeze moved through the space, the work invited visitors to slow down, observe, and experience the changing relationship between light, air, water, and place.

Rather than asking viewers to look at an installation, Light & Air Studies invited them to inhabit one—where subtle changes in light, movement, and atmosphere became the work itself.

Site-Specific Installation | Ocean of Sound, 2026

Light & Air Studies is composed of hand-painted silk, dye-sublimated organza and chiffon, and suspended Japanese wind chimes that respond gently to the movement of air.

Created during Faith-Ann Young's residency with the City of Santa Monica at Camera Obscura Art Lab, the installation was inspired by the changing energy of the Pacific Ocean- its shifting light, tides, wind, and atmosphere.

As sunlight moved across the translucent textiles and the breeze animated the suspended forms, the work invited visitors to slow down and experience the subtle rhythms of the sea.
